SUMMARY:Powder Metallurgy in the Green Transition
DESCRIPTION:The scenario that Europe will experience in the next decades\, and is already experiencing\, is a transition one.  \nEurope is in fact undergoing a significant transition\, demanding a profound renovation of its industry and society. This “Green Transition” necessitates a shift towards a more sustainable impact on the planet\, ensuring a safer environment for humanity. This involves leaner and cleaner processes\, responsible consumption\, and a prioritization of reuse and recycling. While the carbon footprint is a key indicator\, directly linked to the global warming effect\, other factors like energy\, water\, and resource usage must also be addressed. The EU actively fosters innovation in these areas\, aspiring to lead this global change.  \nMining and industrial processing of raw materials for manufacturing will be crucial in this transition\, and Powder Metallurgy (PM) will emerge as a green industry. Its advantages include efficient resource utilization and exceptional flexibility in processing novel and high-performance materials\, and as a natural recycling route. We believe PM will play a central role in the coming decades.  \nRecognizing the importance of this subject\, EPMA introduced in 2024 a new training program focused on PM’s contribution to the Green Transition. This involves a series of standalone training webinars\, each exploring different aspects of the topic. These webinars are designed to benefit both young engineers and researchers seeking to expand their understanding of PM’s capabilities and applications beyond their current focus\, as well as end-users eager to explore the opportunities offered by PM technologies within their respective fields.  \nWe plan to conduct one or more sessions annually\, covering diverse topics while acknowledging the potential for revisiting specific subjects in future editions. The training format includes three distinct lectures delivered by invited experts\, each focusing on a different topic. Each lecture will be 40 minutes in duration\, followed by a dedicated Q&A session. At the conclusion of the training session\, an evaluation test (tick box format) will be administered. SUMMARY:HM Seminar - WinterEV
DESCRIPTION:Programme Location Direction Accommodation\nTHEMATIC approach to HARD MATERIAL EVALUATION\nThe WINTEREVs are series of themed meetings organised by the European Hard Materials Group (EuroHM) of the European Powder Metallurgy Association. The aim is to bring together experts in a particular theme for in-depth discussion of technical issues at a precompetitive level. WINTEREV objectives target technical issues through workshops focusing on an area of importance to both research and industrial communities. Each meeting aims to review research objectives in the light of industry requirements. Where appropriate\, standards activities are included in the review. The topics for debate are sought through questionnaires and other consultation exercises. \nThe proposed WINTEREV 24 meeting will continue our recent agreement to examine in more depth than in earlier WINTEREV/SUMMEREV outings exploring specific characterisation methods and their disadvantages and capabilities. Each contribution is targeted from an expert in the field followed by a practical or theoretical worked example of how the technique or modelling approach will contribute to advancing our knowledge of the properties of hard materials. The following table gives a list of some relevant themes chosen from recent EuroHM strategy assessments. The extensive number of items provides scope for using this approach in a suite of consecutive WINTEREV/SUMMEREVs. \n \nThe recent SIMUCRACK and MICROMECH club projects of EPMA provide good examples where complementary research groups are collaborating successfully using state of the art characterisation themes that illustrate the concept we would like to promote. The overarching aim is to keep the hard material research community up to date with measurement and modelling approaches across the materials environment\, both physical and mechanical. \nEVENT FEES:  \nNon-Members: 400 € + VAT\nMembers : 275 € + VAT\nUniversities/Speakers/chairs: 125 € + VAT

SUMMARY:Powder Metallurgy in the Green Transition - Training Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Programme \n  \nThe scenario that Europe will experience in the next decades\, and is already experiencing\, is a transition one.  \nThe EU industry\, and the whole society\, is requested to undergo a profound renovation\, encompassing necessary changes that will lead to a more sustainable impact of human endeavours on the planet\, and in return\, a safer environment for humans themselves. We can summarise all this under the term “Green Transition”. Processes will have to be leaner and cleaner\, consumers will have to be more responsible\, reuse and recycling will be the rule\, and our habits will likely gradually change. Carbon footprint is the most popular indicator as it is more directly linked to climate change\, but several others; like use of energy\, water and resources\, need to be addressed and the EU is actively fostering innovation in those directions\, as Europe wants to lead the change.  \nMining and industrial processing of raw materials for manufacturing will be a key area; and Powder Metallurgy (PM) proposes itself as a green industry\, with the advantage of efficient use of resources and the outstanding flexibility in processing novel and more performant materials. Thus\, we believe that PM will have a central role in the next decades.  \nDue to the importance of this subject\, EPMA wants to help by introducing a new line of training\, dedicated to the role of PM in the Green Transition. In our plans\, it will be a series of training webinars\, each one as a standalone event\, but all covering different aspects. We expect it to be useful both for young engineers and researchers that want to enlarge their views on capabilities and applications of PM different from that they are working in\, and for end users that want to be updated on the opportunities given by PM technologies in their field. If the acceptance will be satisfactory\, there will be one or more sessions every year with different topics\, although we do not exclude that the same topic may be reviewed in various editions.  \nThe starting format of the sessions\, that we will implement in Session 1\, comprises 3 lectures on different topics\, by invited experts. Each lecture lasts 40 minutes\, plus some time for Q&A; at the end of the session\, there will be an evaluation test (tick box style) that will be analysed by EPMA to emit\, later\, a certificate for each participant with the percentage of achievement. The total duration of the session is 3 hours.  \nThe lectures will be recorded and will be later available for review for the participants\, and for EPMA members. Copy of the slides will be distributed to participants.  \nAs background knowledge\, we require a basic knowledge of powder metallurgy processes (similar to what is obtained after the EPMA PM Summer School) as speakers will not spend time in explaining these topics.  \nTo support the organisation of the event\, a small participant fee is due:  \nEPMA members 50 € \nNon-members 100 €  \n  \nRegistration deadline: Until 19th March 2024 end of day\, CET  \n  \nJoin the first training session today!
