EPMA Launches a New Publication : Introduction to Hard Materials.
Hard metals, or cemented carbides today form the backbone of the tool manufacturing industry with diverse applications. They show a wide range for the combination of high hardness and toughness ,making them suitable for many wear applications such as machining of metallic and non-metallic materials, chipless forming (wire drawing, can tooling, forging, stamping, mill rolls, powder compacting punches and dies, high pressure dies and anvils), mining (oil well drill bits, rock drill bits), industrial nozzles (sand blasting, water jet cutting, painting, glue dispensers), industrial wear parts (dental and medical tools), paper, plastic and textile knives, guide rolls, seal rings, road planing knives, tire studs, forestry tools, earth moving and consolidation tools), and for functional
applications (watch cases and bracelets). The smallest carbide part weighing a fraction of a gram is the tip of a ball point pen (produced in billions per year), whereas rolls and dies, weighing up to a ton, are representative examples of the largest parts.
A new publication has been prepared by the European Hard Materials Group (EuroHM) with scrutiny to include many different aspects of the hard materials world. The booklet covers the cemented carbides with historical and metallurgical background, as well as diverse applications of hard materials through various case studies; and the production steps starting from powder production until the final products such as cutting tools, mining and construction equipment and structural components.
There will also be a Launching webinar where the booklet is presented by the members of the European Hard Materials Group (EuroHM), together with the suppliers of the case studies to the industry, academia and others that are in the ecosystem of Hard Materials.
