An intensive Short Course on Hardmetals, organized by the European Hard Materials Group (EuroHM) of the EPMA took place 9-11 April 2014 in Vienna. Forty-six engineers and scientists from the Hard Materials sector throughout Europe joined with eighteen speakers drawn from both industry and academia to examine the practical capabilities and applications of hardmetals as applied to the powder metallurgy process. The course highlighted the specific properties of hardmetals, the manufacturing processes and major general applications and benefitted “old hands” as well as newcomers to this field. Lectures included: and Overview of Hard Maerials and a History of Hardmetals, Direct and Indirect Shaping, Finishing, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Process Simulation and many more. Participants also had the opportunity to discuss matters in a more relaxed atmosphere over dinner at the Augustinerkeller, one of the last ancient monastery cellars in Vienna.
